Believe it or not, we all have a toxic load.
I see it as layers upon layers of different synthetic chemicals, industrial pollutants, food additives and so on, all adding up in the body to a point where we just don’t function optimally. Some of these chemicals are known as carcinogens, reproductive toxins, neurotoxins, immune system suppressants, and have many other affects. When we have so many toxins floating in our blood stream, or sitting in our fat cells, our every day function becomes suppressed or inflamed. Individuals can experience this in various ways; for some it may be skin conditions, others may have mood disorders, or lung problems, or just a general feeling of being unwell.
If we talk about organic food for healing, indeed all of us who have been exposed to multiple chemicals for most of our lives, healthy or organic eating seems like a no brainer really! In this day and age, we are all educated to know that we get our macro and micronutrients from the food we eat, but what we aren’t told is what if that food is covered in pesticides or pumped with preservatives? What is it doing to our body? Ultimately, it is then putting further pressure on our body.
A good way of thinking about it is: the food that nourishes us comes in its whole form. Food that is close to nature, that has had minimal intervention, will maintain its nutrient content. When we look at produce at the supermarket, some of that food has been in storage for up to ten months before we actually consume it. It may appear to be close to nature, but there’s no way a fresh apple with no intervention would still look edible after ten months. This issue here is that with conventional foods we’re not only getting toxins in them like pesticides, herbicides, fungicides, preservatives, additives, we’re also not getting them fresh, which means they lose their nutrient content. This coupled with our soils being drained of essential minerals due to present day agriculture practices, means that we’re just not getting those nutrients that we need to survive.
Certified Organic Food follows strict regulations here in Australia and around the world. Organic Farmers give special attention to the integrity of the soil, and the end result is food that nourishes us. This is the food we can refer to as medicine. From a Nutritionist and Naturopathic perspective, we talk about specific minerals and vitamins that treat conditions, and those that are chronically lacking in today’s society. We are in a position, where many of us are walking around with an inflamed immune system or have digestive problems, and if you trace this back to its origin, or examine the food intake of that person, it’s more often than not the lack in essential nutrients that has cascaded their condition to this point.
For me and my family, we eat 95% certified organic. If we eat out on the weekends at a restaurant that has conventional foods, it’s ok. But we know that for most of our week, we are getting the nutrients we need to thrive. For some this may seem like a huge expense, and this is definitely an area that I feel our country needs to look at subsidizing organic wholefoods so they’re more affordable, but I have not been to a Doctor in years, and neither has my son. Nourishing food is our first priority in our weekly budget, everything else comes after.
Health isn’t a quick fix. Often it takes someone to go through a health crisis to really look at how they’re treating their body. But it’s not about diet or deprivation, or a quick detox and you’re fixed. When you eat organic produce as your every day food, you get the health benefits, every day. Packed with vitamins, minerals, phytonutrients and always fresh, this food is your life force, your fighting power and the way you love and cherish your body and soul.
