Costhetics, more than skin deep.

Louisa McKay is the Co-founder and Managing Director of Costhetics, Australia’s leading independent and unbiased information source for cosmetic surgery, non-surgical cosmetic treatments and the latest in industry advancements.

Thank you for joining us for our professional edition Louisa.

How did Costhetics come about and what services do you provide to consumers?

At the time (6 years ago) we launched Costhetics because there was no un-biased medical information available in Australia online about cosmetic enhancement; both surgical and non-surgical.

People interested in anything from injectables to a facelift were forced to either go directly to doctor’s websites or look at American review sites. At the time, there was a real need for free information about non-surgical treatments and procedures.

6 years on, we update weekly with new information on treatments and procedures, new devices, surgical techniques and new products. We also review popular celebrity beauty and cosmetic enhancement trends.

We report on deeper issues like why have a procedure and what the risks and complications might be if it doesn’t go to plan.

Can you tell us a bit about your background?

Prior to starting Costhetics, I worked in advertising for beauty magazines.

A lot of people who are flocking to natural skincare and treatments are really confused as to what are non-invasive/toxic free treatments. If a client has something that is bothering them about their appearance like pigmentation for example, what are their choices?

Words like toxic, organic and invasive are used a lot in the world today. It’s important that before you start any skin regime, from skincare to a laser treatment, you understand what you’re exposing your skin to. The skin is the largest organ of the body.

For pigmentation, you need to establish before undergoing any treatment what the pigmentation is the result of e.g. the sun and/or hormonal changes. Some pigmentation can be treated with a peel while other types are better treated with a laser treatment. These kinds of treatments simply slough off the top layers of skin and allow new skin to appear. Any good practitioner will do a test patch on you before undergoing the full treatment to ensure that your skin can tolerate it.

Just to clear this up, are lasers or IPL damaging or invasive to the skin when used correctly?

Any medical device, such as a laser, IPL or BBL must pass stringent testing to prove safety before it can be sold in Australia. So, these devices have a great safety record when used correctly. However, if the device is used incorrectly it could cause harm, just like a motor vehicle.

Lasers and BBL/IPL devices work in such different ways, it’s hard to summarise how they all work in detail, but some remove layers of the skin more aggressively than others. Some could be considered invasive or “damaging” but this effect is temporary and actually advantageous as it removes some skin cells, but stimulates new cell growth, which is how you end up with better looking and healthier skin. My advice when considering any treatment is to look for practitioners with lots of experience using the exact type of laser or device they recommend using for your condition.

 How can customers integrate their cosmetic medicine routine with their wellness routine for glowing skin?

Making sure that you eat well, exercise and get enough sleep are some of the best things you can do for you skin. So, any good skincare regime should start with these things.

It’s also important to use sunscreen every day and stay out of the sun as much as possible in order to protect skin from the sun. Apart from the huge skin cancer risk we face in Australia, the sun has a terrible ageing affect on our skin.

What does your wellness routine look like day to day?

I drink 1 litre of filtered water every day. I also take Kyolic and probiotics to support my bacteria and immune functions. I have a glass of Vital Greens every day, usually in the afternoon.

80% of the time I eat a mostly paleo diet with lots of protein, green vegies and nuts. If I’m out with friends or at a restaurant that doesn’t offer this kind of food, I make the healthiest choices I can find on the menu, but I don’t guilt trip myself or feel bad afterwards, I simply enjoy the food and company.

I also make sure I get 7 hours of deep sleep a night and if I’ve had a big week and feel tired through the day, I’m gentle with myself and make sure I either meditate or have a 30 minute nap during the day.

I do a Tracy Anderson workout at home 6 days a week. If I have a busy week and can’t fit a workout in every day, I don’t beat myself up about it.

What’s your biggest tip for glowing skin?

Drink as much water as you can through the day! The weeks that I’ve been able to drink more water, I generally find that my skin texture is less dry.

I dry brush my body every few days too, which I find makes my skin feel smoother.

Can you tell us one product you can’t live without?

Sunscreen! I wear a 50+ on my face and arms every day, regardless of the weather.
