As an essential express beauty routine, LED Light Rooms are a new concept within the beauty industry.

Just 20 minutes between meetings, on your lunch break, or before/post work or pre-events is all you need to experience the rejuvenating powers of light therapy.

Non-invasive, anti-ageing, and targeting the effects of sun damage – light therapy can be used to treat a myriad of skin conditions. In this short treatment time skin is left rejuvenated from increased collagen stimulation and production; looking smoother, plumper and more radiant.

Little Company in Melbourne’s Cremorne have embraced LED light rooms, installing their own self-service room last month. Excited by the concept I trialled their 3 session pack. At my first session Little Companies friendly staff took me through the process of the self-serve facial cleansing and showed me how to adjust the LED close to my face. The LED that is used doesn’t have any UV so you don’t need to use goggles, which I loved because the light worked on my eye area as well, which I really wanted to focus on for anti-ageing. As I settled into the chair and pulled the light close to my face I found the whole experience incredibly relaxing and it forces you to switch off for 20minutes (its worth the sessions simply for the forced relaxation factor!) Stacey, the owner of Little Company explains further the benefits of LED:

What was the inspiration to create a self serve light room?

We have been working with LED (Heallite) in the rooms for a while and we knew we wanted to make this amazing non invasive technology more accessible. Aside from all the numerous benefits to the skin we also discovered how meditative it was and we wanted to incorporate it into a space where you can have a little light while taking a little time for yourself.

Tell me about your LED machines and what makes them different?

The Led Machines used in the Light room (LightStim) uses a trademarked multi wave technology which simultaneously emits multiple wavelengths (colours)of light which achieves dramatically greater results. Also by combining infared wavelengths with other wavelengths (colours) increases the efficacy of every wavelength.

Whats the best course of LED for people to have? Can you come every week or do you need to do a few in a week and have a break?

LED cannot be overused but generally speaking 2-3x week 4 weeks or 1-2x week 8 weeks is the guideline. Clients may do this 1-2 times year with booster sessions included in regular facials.

What is LED Light Therapy?

Light Emitting Diode LED was originally developed by NASA for plant growth experiments in space and has been used safely in aesthetics for over 15 years. With LED therapy, light is absorbed through the layers of skin and into the skin cells. This light is then converted into energy which stimulates the cell to replicate healthy skin cells.

Benefits…

LED treatments not only have immediate results but more importantly improve the condition and appearance of your skin long term.

Not only does light therapy oxygenate the skin cells it also increases blood flow and circulation reducing inflammation and the appearance of pores, lines and wrinkles.

Following a course of LED treatments helps to build collagen, elastin and other proteins and improves cellular function – all of which are great for treating acne, dermatitis, eczema and rosacea.

How does LED work? Just like plants, our skin and other body tissues have the ability to absorb light and convert it into energy. LED light therapy delivers light energy in a similar way that plants absorb light energy from the sun. LED emits UV-free, beneficial light rays that energise cells and stimulate the body’s natural process to build new proteins and regenerate.

Is it safe? LED is a non-invasive and natural treatment with over hundreds of medical and university studies showing no negative side effects. It has been used safely and effectively for aesthetic applications for over 15 years and is the only aesthetic device that has no contra-indications of any kind. It is safe for the eyes and it cannot be overused. While LED is safe for women who are pregnant and breastfeeding we suggest consulting your doctor first.

Who is it suitable for?

LED is suitable for all skins types, colours and conditions; and provides a non-invasive treatment option. It complements the skin’s own natural ability to rejuvenate, boost collagen synthesis and stimulate wound healing; helping with overall skin health.

Is LED similar to Laser? Not to be confused with laser, LED has a unique ability to produce the same specific light frequencies as lasers without damaging skin tissue. LED does not involve any heating of the skin and improves the health of the skin by stimulating the skin cells metabolism without causing injury and requires no down time.

What should I expect during my first Light Room session?

The sensation is akin to lying in the sun without the damaging effects during which a warm, pleasant feeling can be felt over the entire face. While you’re there you can listen to some background music, mediate, even take a power nap — honestly, the whole process is very relaxing. You will walk out feeling warm, fresh and rejuvenated (LED is also proven to stimulate serotonin levels).

What results can I expect?

On your first session your skin will feel rejuvenated from increased oxygen and blood flow to the skin. After the first 2 weeks’ skin will appear smoother, brighter and more plump. After four weeks’ skin tone will be more even, tighter and firmer with a healthy improvement in tone, clarity and texture of the skin. The complexion is plumped up with new collagen (which pushes the folds of the wrinkles out) and new elastin (which helps to tighten the skin and give it more elasticity).

How many Light sessions will I need?

Light room sessions are recommended two to three times a week for a course of four to six weeks. Ideal for pre-wedding prep or before a big event, a session only takes 20 minutes.

How long do the effects last?

LED therapy will help stimulate the skin’s natural cellular processes which help to rejuvenate and repair damaged skin; after a course of treatments this result continues to improve up to 4-6 months after a light treatment.

Will it make me breakout?

LED will not contribute to breakouts, it will actually help with the healing of breakouts by speeding up recovery time, assisting with inflammation and increasing lymphatic flow to help with toxic build up.

Can I apply make-up straight after? You can apply make-up right after an LED treatment. We provide an organic tinted SPF, but if you prefer more coverage we recommend using natural makeup where possible.

Will it help with pigmentation?

LED can help with the underline inflammation of pigmentation, boosting the health of the skin and helping to minimise the appearance of pigmentation.

Is it ok for sensitive skin?

LED is perfectly safe for sensitive skin, it is non-invasive and is a fantastic treatment to aid skins that are experiencing anything from mild sensitivity to eczema by helping increase the skin’s natural wound healing process.
