Four Easy Ways To Keep Hair Healthy In Summer

There are a few routine summer beauty switch-ups that go without saying – use a lighter moisturiser, prep your skin with a good body scrub & natural faux tan, and get your feet pedicured into shape & ready for sandals – but what about your hair?

It’s equally important with the increase sun, sand & sea exposure in summer time to make sure you’re looking after your tresses – because nobody wants dry, split & unhealthy locks, at any time of year! Read on for my top tips on getting your hair ready and keeping it beautiful through the warmer months.

1. Keep it covered – hair needs sun protection too!

Too much UV exposure can wreak havoc your hair as well as your skin. If you spend lots of time in the sun (walking around outdoors, visiting the beach), then wear a hat or a scarf to protect your locks and invest in a natural protective conditioning spray like Innersense’s Sweet Spirit Leave-in Conditioner .

2. Cut out extra heat wherever you can

If anyone understands heat-styler addiction, it’s me. My hair is permanently stuck somewhere between wavy and straight, so if I want it to be either, I usually have to style it.
But in summer, it’s a good idea to try to avoid heat styling wherever possible. Your hair is already under stress from extra UV exposure and is probably feeling dryer than it did in the winter months; so you need to give it some extra help to stay healthy. Try air-drying your hair more often, and if it isn’t ‘sitting’ the way you want it to without styling, use a natural styling treatment to help define it and reduce frizz. I love Innersense’s Inner Reflection Finishing Polish  – apply a small amount from the mid-lengths to the ends while your hair is still wet, twirl, and voila – beachy waves in an instant! If you prefer a more ‘piece-y’ look, try spritzing & scrunching with one of Captain Blankenship’s Mermaid Sea Salt Sprays .

3. Rinse and repeat

Those showers at the beach aren’t just handy for getting the sand off your toes. Whenever you take a dip in the sea or in a chlorinated swimming pool, you rinse your hair shortly afterwards. Leaving salt or chlorine in for hours on end can be damaging and drying to the hair and scalp, and it doesn’t help with colour retention either! If you’re worried about colour fading in the sun, use a natural shampoo & conditioner especially designed for coloured hair.

4. Hydrate!

Drinking lots of water in summer is a must – but you can help your hair and scalp even more by using an intensive, repairing hydration treatment once a week to rectify some of that sun and sea damage! Try Captain Blankenship’s Mermaid Hair Oil or Innersense’s Harmonic Healing Oil. For a luxurious conditioning treat, apply all over then cover hair with plastic wrap and a warm towel. Leave for 30 minutes, rinse off and say hello to shinier, healthier tresses!
