There are not a lot of beauty brands that get me excited straight away.

Ok, as a natural beauty junky there’s a quite a few brands I love! BUT given the explosion of brands in the past few years there’s few that making me WOW really loudly straight away. Dusk by Adele is one of them. I ordered her natural mascara and it was by far the best mascara I’ve used ever! (natural or not). I’ve been on the hunt for a natural mineral spf powder for sun protection, and this is a newer edition to the collection as well. Not to mention her classic red lipsticks and face oils, there’s not much to not love about this brand!

I caught up with founder Adele McConnell for more details on her passion for natural skincare.

What was the driving factor behind launching your own skincare brand?

For years I worked in the beauty and health industries and have used more brands professionally and personally than I can possibly count- but none of them compared to my own, simple, homemade concoctions.

As I transitioned to being self employed in my own businesses and grew my audience (firstly through my Vegie Head brand) I began talking about skincare… hesitantly, as I wasn’t sure that food and skin health would mesh well. But people wanted more. So I created an online program (Stripped Bare) which covered a lot of what I practiced in my own skincare regime, and shared homemade skincare recipes, information and people then started wanting me to sell my own creations. I was promoting a number of skincare brands through my business – then decided that it was silly, and to just start my own line!

Your skincare is primarily oils, what are the benefits of oil cleansing?

One of the biggest skin laws (and laws in chemistry) is that ‘like attracts like’. For oily skin, this is particularly true; most people who think they’ve got oily skin are more likely to be severely dehydrated than oily. It helps the body regulate it’s own sebum production, and allows our body to ‘take a break’.

When we use harsh cleansers with soap or alcohol bases, we strip the skin of the lipids and oils is requires to remain healthy. By using an oil to cleanse, we don’t remove these vital skin nutrients.

Can you tell us what are the key oils you use in your products for optimum skin health?

Raw, unrefined organic sesame oil is one of my personal favourites- it’s been used for centuries in Ayurveda and is very cleansing for the skin and body. It features predominantly in my Cleansing Oil. It also features Swee Almond Oil, Organic Castor Oil and Organic Macadamia Nut Oil.

I also love Rosehip Oil, which is nourishing, high in vitamins and essential fatty acids and features in my Daily Skin Elixir, along with Jojoba Oil, Red Raspberry Seed Oil and Organic Argan Oil.

I LOVE your cosmetics! Your lipsticks reached cult status as soon as they launched. But I’m really interested to learn more about your sun protection powder. How does the powder work to top up your sun protection throughout the day?

Thank you! Yes, the lipsticks have been phenomenal – everyone needs a good lipstick!

The Powder Protection is one of my latest products. I wanted something non-greasy, that I could carry in my purse, and apply over the top of my makeup or wear alone. A lot of people were coming to me, asking for my sunscreen recommendations, as they’d often break out or have a reaction to commercial brands.

Powder Protection is an exclusive mineral based formula is designed for everyday wear for all skin types, genders, and ages. In an easy to use, high quality vegan brush, the soft fibres will glide effortlessly over your skin to dispense the powder.

It’s a blocker, so helps deflect harmful UVA and UVB rays, and can be used all over the face and body.

Your mascara is the best one I’ve ever used (natural or traditional) what are the key ingredients in the mascara that makes it perform so well?

Thank you! We spent a lot of time researching the best ingredients and are so happy with the results!

It contains chamomile, which is soothing for sensitive eyes and skin, coffee for a long lasting colour and to help with thickness, cinnamon and rosemary, which gently stimulate the hair follicle, and pure vanilla, for a heavenly scent.

What is your favourite product?

Tough question! I’d have to say my Cleansing Oil, as it was the first ever product I made all those years ago in beauty college! The formula has always been the same as it works so well. That, and I love my jade rollers!
