Facial Rejuvenation and Cosmetic Acupuncture

A long time fan of acupuncture I’ve been curious to see how facial rejuvenation acupuncture works. So I was very excited to visit Sheena on a Saturday afternoon in her Melbourne clinic. Sheena starts with a thorough health examination through questions and checking my tongue and pulse. My diagnosis for my internal health depends on how deep she will need to go with the treatment. Today we will be working from a hormonal balancing point of view with the Chinese medicine. My skin is a little disrupted at the moment and needs some rejuvenation.

Sheena starts by cleaning and toning with organic brand La Mav. This is a gentle yet effective way to get the skin nice and clean in preparation for the dermal rolling. Dermal rolling is a roller with small needles (about .5mm), which create small traumas in the skin to encourage the skin to build new collagen fibers. It’s not uncomfortable at all and is quite relaxing. Focusing on areas of concern where I have a bit of scarring and some fine lines. Following the rolling hyaluronic acid serum is applied to hydrate and soothe my skin.

Next Sheena moves onto the acupuncture. She applies the needles to points in my body first for hormonal balancing and immune boosting. This is will help my body heal and re-balance itself. When the body is in balance your skin functions as it should and glows with health. For the facial acupuncture she uses specialized fine, silicone coated (to make them extra smooth) needles on the face. I’m a little nervous with the needles going into my face but it’s very gentle and I can’t feel them at all once they’re in. Sheena leaves me to soak and relax for 20 minutes while the needles work their magic.

Once the needles are removed a green tea serum based on Camellia oil that contains 4 anti-ageing herbs is applied. This is then massaged in with a jade stone to help muscles relax and unblock my lymphatic system. The jade stone works on releasing tension in the jaw and muscles, reducing puffiness around the eyes and chin and relaxing and lifting the brow. Sheena later tells me that fine lines and furrows around the face can correspond with what’s happening emotionally in your life. Read the full article here.

I feel so much more relaxed after this beautiful treatment. Acupuncture always makes me feel so nourished and cared for. My face is glowing and also looks so much more relaxed and calm, all my fine lines from stress and worry have all but disappeared.

For cosmetic acupuncture to have a long lasting impact on your looks, Sheena recommends a regular course of treatments to really work on some inner health and re-balancing. One of the unique benefits of cosmetic acupuncture as performed by a qualified Chinese medicine doctor is that you may be able to claim the cost back on your private health insurance too.
