What are essential fatty acids?

Essential fatty acids are a compound acid that the body requires for good health that the body cannot create by itself. Two fatty acids essential for body health are alpha-linolenic acid (commonly known as Omega 3) and linoleic acid, also known as Omega 6. Within the family there is also Omega 9, but unlike Omega 3 and Omega 6 which are listed as essential fatty acids, as Omega 9 can be created by the body internally but are still beneficial to body health.

How do we get enough essential fatty acids?

Each of the three fatty acids can be consumed in the following ways, to help produce and maintain the skins internal oil barrier, which is crucial for hydrated and plump skin.

Omega 3: Fish oils, and Flaxseed, Walnut Oil, and Chia Seed oils.

Omega 6: Linoleic Acid and Passionfruit Oil.

Omega 9: Flaxseed Oil, Soya Bean, Canola Oil, Peanut Oil, Sunflower Oil.

Essential fatty acids for the skin

When applied topically to the skin, essential fatty acids serve as building blocks for the surface of the skin, resulting in a smoother, more even, and healthier looking complexion.

  • Increasing hydration, eliminating flaking and dehydration
  • Calms the external signs of external environmental damage including redness and sensitivity
  • Deliver much-needed antioxidants to the skin, in turn reducing signs and process of ageing.
  • Assists in the reduction of trans-epidermal water loss, where hydration is absorbed into the air and away from the body and skin.

In the clinic, we have a number of products containing essential fatty acids, but one of our favourites is the Simple As That Makeup Remover, which contains both Omega 6 & 9 Fatty Acids. Simple As That is a vegan, natural, fair trade, gluten & nut free brand, suitable for sensitive skin types.
