Why do you choose an organic lifestyle?
I have practiced an organic lifestyle for many years for both for personal and environmental reasons. I love cooking healthy nutritious meals and always try to buy organic produce, it doesn’t only taste better but I also feel safe in the knowledge that produce is free from harmful chemicals and pesticides. Today, we’re fortunate in the fact that most supermarkets offer a good range of organic fresh fruit, vegetables and meat. However, I prefer to shop locally where possible, I adore boutique organic local stores and farmers markets where everything is so fresh and inviting.
For me, organic is definitely a lifestyle choice and something I’m very mindful of, therefore it extends to every part of my life whether it be the food that myself and my family eat, my favourite face cream or even cleaning products. I love to know that my sustainable approach is working to protect our precious ecosystem; organic farming methods are aligned with the harmony of nature and preservation of soil and crops will ultimately preserve our wildlife. In my opinion, if we continue to pollute the soil with harmful chemicals there is no doubt that it will drastically affect our ecosystem in future years.
Why are organic products better than traditional?
Although organic foods are not completely chemical free, the pesticides will be considerably lower than those found in produce manufactured with synthetic chemicals. Genetically modified food continues to be a topic of great controversy, yet most of the population are actually eating it every day. Organic farming is all about nature and production of food without the use of synthetic chemicals or genetically modified products. Therefore, when we purchase organic we are investing in sustainably sourced, natural produce and avoiding chemicals and poisons that can potentially harm both the inside and outside of our bodies as well as the environment.
Furthermore, the fact that organic produce is often sold locally means that we can always enjoy the most seasonal fresh food throughout the year. I find that the fresh organic produce actually tastes so much better due to the fact that the soil is naturally mineral rich and the food has not been frozen, shipped, and transported across the world.
How do certified organic products benefit our health?
Today, everything is mass produced to meet our ever-growing demand and therefore the level of vitamins and minerals in our food is nothing compared to what it used to be. However, some organic foods have been proven to contain 50% more vitamins, minerals and nutrients compared to genetically modified food. Certified organic products are also thought to boost our immune system and prevent premature ageing as they are rich in natural nutrients the body loves.
How are certified organic products more nutritious for our bodies?
Organic foods have more enzymes, minerals, micronutrients and vitamins than anything grown commercially because the soil is carefully controlled for sustainability and nourishment. Genetically modified food is filled with harmful toxins that can actually outweigh the nutritional value of the food consumed. In fact, when produce is sprayed with these chemicals it can actually significantly affect water soluble vitamins such as Vitamin C. Organic produce is known to include lower nitrate levels along with increased levels of vitamin C and selenium to name a few.
It’s also important to highlight that when we eat organic we are also avoiding harmful hormones, antibiotics and drugs found in a wide range of animal products. The antibiotics fed to these animals have been known to affect our immune system as over use of these can mean that they become ineffective.
