New Zealand natural beauty brand Antipodes has made splash since launching in 2006.
I caught up with CEO & Founder of Antipodes, Elizabeth Barbalich to find out more about this ethical brand built from nature.
Tell us a bit about how Antipodes started?
9 years ago I identified a gap in the market, for a cool, niche brand, featuring bioactive New Zealand ingredients. I always imagined a woman in central London (or any international city) lifting the lid of an Antipodes product to escape to the Antipodes (region) – even for a brief moment. It’s important to bring a little escapism and luxury into a daily beauty ritual.
The Antipodes wallpaper pattern is inspired by New Zealand nature – which sits as a backdrop to our cities and towns – much like a wallpaper functions. It has become our signature look, defining the type of discerning women who loves the brand.
Soon after launching our initial seven products, I identified a need to move into in-vitro scientific investigations along with certified organic status.
What makes organic ingredients from New Zealand magical?
Pure nature equals health. My favourite quote is by Albert Einstein (and quoted by Antipodes from the outset)
“look deep into nature and you will understand everything better”
You have some great resources on your site. What was the inspiration to create your own 3 step basic system for customers?
To create a skincare routine that is easy to follow and works with the range of Antipodes products.
What’s your favourite ingredient to work with and why?
I have many favourite ingredients and products so it is difficult to choose just one.
Are all your products vegetarian approved?
Most of them except for the products that do not contain beeswax or honey
Do you have a favourite product?
I love our Grapeseed Butter Cleanser – it’s a rich balm that completely nourishes and hydrates, whilst performing the equal to a double cleanse. Perfect for dry skin, but also great for helping balance and regulate excess oil production.
I’m also currently loving Worship Antioxidant Superfruit Serum – a water based serum to help defend skin from signs of aging, with strong scientific studies to show it inhibits free radical production. Its lovely under Rejoice Light Facial Day cream, and my skin positively glows when using this.
55 seconds for 55 dolphins is a video competition for New Zealand secondary students. What do you hope raising awareness for Maul Dolphins change in the eco system?
By taking up this challenge, you’re helping with WWF’s conservation work to protect this precious species. They are at risk from netting and trawling, and only half their habitat is protected therefore by raising awareness, and together with WWF, we can put pressure on the government to protect these treasured animals, and help affected fishers to transition to dolphin-friendly methods.
Lastly, what is one beauty product you simply cannot live without?
Avocado Pear Nourishing Night cream – multi award winner – Scientifically shown to stimulate type 1 collagen production in-vitro. My dry skin loves this product!
Thanks so much for taking 5 with Natural Beauty Expert!
